It is true that the story was dependant on stereotypes and fixed definitions. I don't however think this story was meant as a polemic against such things (for example, when was a stereotype ever shown to be misplaced? The gnomes fit the stereotype with but one exception and he was stereotyped in the manner of his exception. The witch was a stereotyped witch. Etc.) Can't stories be written for fun anymore?
